“The deepest part of who we are is not at peace
with all the suffering in the world
and the systems that perpetuate it . . . .
We all wince when we see someone suffering in our midst
or even on the computer or television screen.
When we hear the news of a shooting spree in a public place,
there is not only terror,
there is genuine compassion and concern.
I want Americans to act with the energetic
generosity of spirit they showed on 9/11. . . .
If we slow down and find some space away
from the daily chatter that tells us how to think,
who to be, and what to buy,
we can discover our capacity for resilience.
We can discover that the values
that made this country great
are contained within each of us.
Tim Ryan, from A Mindful Nation: How a Simple Practice
Can Help Us Reduce Stress, Improve Performance,
and Recapture the American Spirit
LISTENING DEEP TO OUR SOULS
WE BEGIN TO CLEANSE SUFFERING
AND UNITE WITH PEACE
In the center of where I am, there is joy.
There is peace.
There is happiness.
I breathe in the power of happiness.
I feel its breath fill my body.
I celebrate its freedom.
I stop judging myself
in this second
I am free
from judging anyone or anything
